STUDENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
(SAP)

My name is Rachel Skelly.  I am pleased to announce that I will be the Project Success/Student Assistant Program Facilitator for the 2007-2008 school year.  The program I will be offering to students in grades 7-12  throughout the school day Tuesday and Wednesday is called The Student Assistance Program.

What is the Student Assistance Program?
The Student Assistance Program is a collaborative effort between the Seaway Valley Prevention Council and Norwood Norfolk School. The goal of this program is to work with students on a multitude of problems and concerns which may inhibit their ability to function effectively in school and at home.  Examples of some common problems and concerns include (but are not limited to):  bullying, test taking skills, homework skills, time management, drug use, goal setting, anger management, peer pressure, refusal skills, stress, relationships, self esteem, exercise and nutrition.

The program will provide intervention services that promote positive behavior, health and well-being, and personal success, while reducing risk factors that lead to risk taking behavior through prevention education.  Sessions will consist of one to one contact or group work, facilitated by myself, with students who share similar problems and concerns.

How are students referred/admitted to the program?
Students can be referred to the program by teachers, school staff, family, friends, or self referrals by the individual. Referrals will remain anonymous unless otherwise specified by the referring party.  A student is not in trouble if you make a referral to the SAP, it merely indicates that you have noticed something that is or could be problematic.  Students will be seen during study hall periods that coincide with my schedule.  Admission into the SAP is voluntary and may take one or several visits as deemed appropriate by the student and myself.   If there is any doubt as to whether a student is appropriate for the program, please speak with me.  I can be reached at Seaway Valley Prevention Council 379-1211 and at Norwood Norfolk  School 353-6631.  I look forward to meeting with you to discuss any questions or concerns about the program.
