  • REGISTER FOR THE SCHOOL TAX RELIEF PROGRAM (STAR)

    New Legislation requires all homeowners receiving a Basic STAR exemption to register with the New York State Tax Department to receive STAR exemptions in 2014 and subsequent years.

    Homeowners will not have to register to receive their 2013 STAR exemptions.

    This is part of an initiative to protect New Yorkers against the costs of inappropriate or fraudulent STAR exemptions.

    Two percent cap on STAR savings increasesBeginning with 2011-12 school tax bills, the savings resulting from the Basic or Enhanced STAR exemptions are limited to a 2% increase over the prior year.The maximum STAR savings for each school district is calculated by the Office of Real Property Tax Services (ORPTS).

  • Information on your school tax bill

    The amount of your STAR savings will continue to be displayed on your school property tax bill. However, because the cap is on the STAR savings (rather than the exemption amount), your savings and exemption may not be directly reflective of each other.
